Twitter Is Aghast About What Facebook Paid for WhatsApp

Twitter users' reaction to Facebook agreeing to pay $16 billion for WhatsApp can be summed up in two words: What's that? Compared to the $1 billion CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Co. paid for Instagram—which to an American mindset, is more popular—the total sum (which entails $12 billion in shares) seems beyond the pale to many. But WhatsApp's user base of 450 million is triple that of Instagram and mostly overseas.

Facebook to Buy WhatsApp for $16B

Facebook has a deal to buy the messaging platform WhatsApp for $16 billion, the company announced. WhatsApp has more than 450 million users, according to the latest numbers from the company, and Facebook has been in the market for the hot messaging space. "WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.

Broadcasters Win Against Aereo in Utah District Court

Weeks before the U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments between broadcasters and Aereo, a district judge in Utah has imposed a preliminary injunction against the streaming TV service. U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball ruled that the streaming video service was engaging in copyright infringement, in clear viloation of the 1976 Copyright Act.   At the conclusion of the Court’s 26-page judgment, Kimball said Fox Broadcasting Co.

Yahoo's 'Gemini' Pairs Native Ads And Mobile Search

Yahoo has launched a self-service set of tools called Gemini for mobile search and native advertising. Per a rep for the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based digital company, it believes a one-stop shop for the two ad units could make a difference in attracting brand marketers. Mobile search ads have been available for the last month via Yahoo Ad Manager, which CEO Marissa Mayer unveiled at CES in Las Vegas.

Spark Gets ConAgra Media Business

Spark, which previously served as ConAgra Foods’ digital agency, has won all of the packaged food company’s U.S. media planning and buying business, sources said. The account had previously been handled by WPP Group’s MediaCom.  Reps at the media arm of Publicis Groupe’s Starcom MediaVest Group unit declined comment and those at the Omaha marketer could not immediately be reached.

As the lodging industry grapples with Airbnb, TripAdvisor and other locally oriented services, major hotel brands are increasingly taking a back seat to the surrounding neighborhoods. “Our facility is no longer the destination,” said one hotel executive. “Now we are a portal to the community around us.” About half of travelers want to explore the local area while on a business trip, according to a 2013 survey released this week by Millward Brown.
